Chapter 7: Caerovan's POV: The House Was Hers

Caerovan found Ysmerelle's luggage beside the front door before breakfast.

Her companion stood over an open travelling bag.

There was another bag on the bench, wide enough for a dragon and lined with soft cloth.

He climbed onto the bench and put his foreclaws over its edge.

A pair of spare boots looked back at him.

Virelle watched him withdraw his head.

"Those are going with us," she said.

"I wasn't asking for transport."

He had been hoping someone would offer it.

That distinction sounded less convincing while he was still standing beside the boots.

The companion closed the bag.

He looked toward the narrow leather case beside it.

"That one contains hatpins," she told him.

He moved away from it before she could open it for inspection.

Ysmerelle came downstairs carrying the handbag he'd used at the ball.

She had put her own belongings inside again.

He could see her gloves against the lining.

"The carriage is ready," she told Virelle.

Caerovan wanted to say he hadn't finished deciding whether to go.

She hadn't asked him to decide.

He watched her give the footman a small parcel to carry outside.

Her house was a short journey away.

He had agreed it would remain hers because he had wanted the engagement signed promptly.

Now she was going to use it without asking whether that suited him.
