Chapter 11: The Driver

Chantal found him at dusk on the roof garden of St. Anselm.

She had come alone, in the same navy suit, with her heels in her hand and no makeup left on her face.

Caleb sat on a bench by the railing.

Below him, the city lights were coming on in long rows.

"A nurse told me you come up here after visiting hours," she said.

"Which nurse?"

"A kind one." She stayed three steps away.

"Can I stand here?"

"It's a public roof."

She set her shoes on the ground.

Neither of them spoke for a while.

Then he took out his phone and turned it so she could read the message on the screen.

She read it.

All the blood left her face.

"Who sent this?" she said, though she knew.

"A number I don't know."

"It's Desmond."

"I figured." Caleb put the phone away.

"Who was driving, Chantal?"

She looked at the railing.

Her fingers curled around the cold metal and her knuckles went white.

"I was," she said.

The wind pulled at her hair.

"You were."

"I was driving. Desmond sat beside me. He had his phone out because he thought it was funny that I was speeding."

He said nothing.

"It was Route 9 at night. There was a man in the crosswalk, in a dark coat. I saw him too late."

"You hit him."

"I hit him. The wheel snapped my wrist." She held up her left hand, and the pale line was still there.

"I stopped the car, and I saw him lying in the road."

"And you left."

"Desmond told me to drive." Her breath shook.

"He said, if you stay, it's your life. Brannigan Group goes under, your father's name goes under. I drove away, and I heard the man moaning in my mirror."
