Chapter 15: Wake Up
Carter lay on his side on the stage, one arm flung out, his pale blue tie across his face.
His mother screamed his name.
Chairs scraped all over the ballroom. Somebody's glass broke.
"Is there a doctor?" the woman in the gold dress cried into the microphone. "Is there a doctor here?"
A man at a back table stood up with his napkin still tucked in his collar.
I got there first.
I knelt down on the stage in my dress, beside the man I'd almost married, for the second time that summer.
My father stood over us both.
I put two fingers on Carter's wrist.
Strong. Slow. Steady as a clock.
His eyelids were squeezed shut.
His mother was at the bottom of the steps now, trying to get up them in her heels, held back by a waiter.
"Don't touch him!" she shrieked. "Get away from my son!"
I leaned down until my mouth was an inch from Carter's ear.
Nobody else could hear me. The room was too loud.
Sam had told me in the lobby, before the hydrangeas, before the quartet. The detectives had made a stop that afternoon on Passyunk Avenue.
