Chapter 18: The Stoop

He was sitting on the second step in a wrinkled blue oxford, his elbows on his knees, holding a paper cup of coffee.

He looked like he'd been there for hours.

I stood at the window with the kettle starting to tick behind me.

Upstairs, Sam was still asleep.

I could have gone back up and woken him.

I went and found a pair of shorts and my cardigan, and I opened the front door.

Carter stood up.

"Hazy."

"What are you doing here?"

"I needed to see you." His voice was raw. "My father bailed me out Friday. I haven't slept."

"That's not my problem."

"I know. I know it's not." He came up one step. "Just listen. Please. I'm getting help. There's a program for gambling, in Arizona. Thirty days. I'll go. I'll do whatever you want."

"I want you off my step."

"I'm going to be a father."

"No," I said. "You're not."

Across the street, a door opened.

The old woman came out with her broom. She swept nothing, very slowly, facing us.

Next door, the stroller dad was loading the stroller into his trunk. He stopped.
