Chapter 24: Remember This

Polly planned all of it, and nobody fainted.

We were married on the third Saturday in August, in the back garden of my father's house in Chestnut Hill.

My mother's roses were blooming along the fence.

My father had paid a man to bring them back from the dead, and stood over him all spring.

There were sixty chairs on the grass, not three hundred.

No club. No calligraphy. No string quartet.

Polly's husband and two men from his firehouse grilled sausages on a borrowed grill by the garage.

My dress was ivory and came to my knees.

I'd bought it off a rack on Walnut Street in fifteen minutes, three doors down from the bridal shop.

I never did go back for the first one.

The old woman from across my street came in a hat with cherries on it.

The stroller dad came with his stroller and a second baby in it.

The woman detective came and sat in the back row in a sundress, with her reading glasses on her head.

Sam's grandmother sat in the front row in lavender, with her rolling pin in her purse. She'd brought it to show people.

"In case," she said.

"In case of what, Gram?"

"In case," she said again, and patted the purse.

The officiant was a judge who'd served on the hospital board with my father. She'd agreed to keep it under twenty minutes.

My father walked me down the grass.

He was slower than last year, and steadier.

He stopped at the end of the aisle and kissed my forehead, and shook Sam's hand for a long time.

"You'll feed her," he said.

"Every Sunday, sir."

"Not just Sundays."

"No, sir."

Then he went and sat beside Sam's grandmother, and she handed him a handkerchief before he even needed it.

Polly stood up with me, as my maid of honor, in a green dress.

Our daughter was in her arms.

She was six months old, round and solemn, in a white dress with a lace collar.

She also wore the pink pompom hat. Sam's grandmother had won that argument too.

Sam stood across from me under my mother's arbor.

He wore a navy suit that fit him, and a tie that didn't. He'd tied it himself.

He looked at me. Like he was memorizing it.

The judge read the beginning.

Then she turned to Sam.

"Sam has written his own vows," she said.

Sam took a breath.

He didn't take out a piece of paper.

"Hazel tests memory for a living," he said to everybody. "She gave me a test once, at a Phillies game. Fifteen words. I got eleven."
