Chapter 8: Hazy

"Don't roll it down," Sam said.

I didn't roll it down.

I opened the door and got out.

Sam said a word I won't repeat and got out on his side.

Carter stepped back to give me room. He was smiling, the soft smile, the one from our first year.

Up close he smelled like bourbon and the cologne I'd bought him for Christmas.

"Hazy," he said.

"Don't."

"No, listen. Please. Just listen."

Behind him, people were drifting out of the Apothecary onto the sidewalk.

Smokers. The girl in the jean jacket and her friends. The blonde in the green dress.

Somebody always comes out to watch.

"It came back," Carter said.

His voice cracked in the right place.

"When I saw that bag on your nurse's desk. It came back all at once. You. Us. The bridge. Your mom's ring box in your nightstand. The way you sing in the shower and get the words wrong."

"That's interesting," I said. "On Wednesday you couldn't beat a monkey."

Someone on the sidewalk laughed.

Carter's eye twitched.

He kept going.

"I know how it looks. I know what you think you heard at the club. I was confused, Hazy. I was saying things. The doctors said I might say things."

"You said ten women."

"I was joking with the guys. I didn't even know what I was saying. I didn't know who you were."

"You knew my nickname."

He reached into his pocket.

I knew what it was before he took it out.

His grandmother's ring, the oval, two carats. Somebody had fished it out of the whiskey.

And Carter Appleton got down on one knee on the sidewalk on Second Street, in front of a food truck.
