Chapter 10: Both Checks

We sat on my kitchen floor with our backs against the cabinets.

Priya wore my T-shirt, and I wore a blanket, and neither of us had touched the coffee.

"My parents own three restaurants," she said. "Anand Kitchen, the one on Lamar, and the new one downtown."

"I've eaten at all of them."

"The new one cost two million dollars." She stared at her knees. "Dylan's father paid for it. It's a loan, with the restaurants as collateral, and if I break the engagement, he calls it in."

"He'd do that to you?"

"He'd do it to my parents. He'd be very polite about it." Her mouth twisted. "They'd lose everything. The restaurants, the house, my father's savings. My mother has not stopped smiling in two years."

I said nothing.

"So I can't cancel. Everyone would know it was me." She turned her head. "But if the wedding fell apart by itself, if something happened that no one could blame on me, then nobody would owe anybody anything."

"A disaster."

"A perfect, anonymous, unlucky disaster." She laughed, thin and sad. "I found you through a friend who knows a lawyer. You were the best."

"Then Cass came to me too."

"Cass doesn't know about me, and I didn't know about her." Priya shook her head. "Two clients, one job. We're the stupidest family in Texas."

I laughed. I couldn't help it.

She laughed too, wetly, and wiped her face on my sleeve.

Then I got up, and went to my desk, and took out my laptop.

"What are you doing?"

"Refunding you."

She stared at me.

I opened my business account and sent fifteen thousand dollars back to the law firm, with a note.

I pulled twelve thousand in cash from the drawer where I had locked it the day Cass handed it over, and I put the stack in an envelope.

"That's Cass's," I said. "I'll give it to her myself."

"Jo, you don't have to"

"Neither of you pays me." I sat back down beside her. "Not for this. Not for what we do at night."
