Chapter 6: Satin Ribbon
Priya had the ribbon in her purse.
It was cream satin, two inches wide, and as long as my arm.
"The florist wrapped my bouquet sample in it," she said. "I took it home. I don't know why."
"I do."
We were upstairs in the old farmhouse at midnight, in the bridal suite with the four-poster bed.
She stood by the window in her work clothes, a gray skirt and a blouse, with the ribbon in both hands.
Dylan thought she was at a late meeting with the caterer.
I thought about that exactly once, and then I put it away.
"Give it to me," I said.
She crossed the room and placed the ribbon in my palm.
Her fingers were cold.
"I want you to tell me what to do," she said. "All of it. I don't want to decide anything."
"Tonight."
"Tonight and every night." She tried to laugh, and it didn't come out. "Is that stupid?"
"It isn't stupid."
I wound the ribbon once around my fist.
"Take off your glasses."
She took them off, folded them, and set them on the vanity.
"Turn around."
She turned.
I stepped up behind her and unbuttoned the blouse, one pearl button at a time.
My knuckles brushed her spine.
I pushed the cotton off her shoulders, and the blouse dropped to the floor.
Under it she wore a pale pink bra, and I unhooked it with one flick.
"Skirt."
She unzipped it herself and let it fall.
She stood in front of me in nothing but pink underwear and her own bare skin.
Her breath came quick and shallow, and I could see her pulse beating at the base of her neck.
I put my hand there, and she closed her eyes.
"Good," I said. "You're doing so well."
A shudder ran down her whole body.
"Say it again."
"You're good, Priya. You're so good."
Her knees nearly gave out.
I walked her to the bed.
The four posts were old pine, rubbed smooth, with a ring of carved leaves at the top.
I sat her down on the quilt, and I stood over her, and I took her left wrist.
"Hands up."
She raised both arms.
I wrapped the satin around her left wrist twice and tied it to the bedpost with a firm bow.
I did the right wrist next, and pulled the knot snug.
Her arms were stretched above her head, her breasts lifted, her whole body open to me.
She tugged once, and the ribbon held.
"Oh," she said.
"Tighter," she said, and her eyes went dark.
