Chapter 21: Her Name
The door of my loft had barely shut when I put the earpiece on the bookshelf, next to his holster, and turned around.
Josiah stood in the middle of my floor in his good charcoal suit.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he unbuckled the steel Timex from his left wrist, and he laid it on the windowsill.
I had never once seen him take it off.
"It's twenty to midnight, Ms. Dunavant," he said. "I'm closing the contract early."
"Is that allowed?" I said.
"I'm the firm."
"Then come here."
He crossed the floor in three strides and picked me up.
I wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck.
He carried me to the front window.
The window was a wide old one with a deep sill and the whole street below it.
The bike shop's neon hung dark, and Nashville spread out beyond it in rows of lit windows.
He set me on the sill.
The glass was cold at my back.
"Dress," he said.
He found the zipper at the side of the black dress and drew it down.
He lifted the dress over my head and dropped it, and my bra went after it, and the cold of the glass crept up my spine.
I started on his jacket.
He let me strip it off him, and then the white shirt, one button at a time.
I kissed every inch of his chest as it came out.
I got his belt open and his trousers down.
He kicked them aside and stood in front of me naked, thick and hard, with his chest rising.
"Look at you," I said.
"Look at you," he said.
"I'm not anybody's wife tonight."
"Legally, you are," he said.
"Not anymore. I filed on Monday, and tonight I said it to two hundred people."
I took his face in my hands.
"Tonight I'm just a woman on a windowsill," I said. "Come and find out."
His eyes closed.
"God, I love you," Josiah said.
It came out of him all at once.
