Chapter 24: Come As You Are
The neon heart was lit when we pulled into the gravel lot at noon on Saturday, and the blue script under it glowed in daylight.
The lady in the sequined vest stood on the chapel steps with her hands on her hips.
"Well, it's about time," she said. "I held the chair for you."
Josiah got out of the Tahoe in the good charcoal suit, and went around to open my door.
I stepped down in a long ivory dress with fourteen small buttons up the back, and my father's Martin on its strap across my shoulder.
The garnet on my hand was chipped at one edge, and it caught the sun.
"Ms. Dunavant," Josiah said.
"Mr. Hardaway," I said.
"You look like a woman about to read every page," he said.
"I'm going to read every page twice."
He laughed.
Inside, the chapel had eight white pews and a stained-glass window of a dove.
Geneva sat in the front row in a lavender hat, with her pocketbook upright on her knees.
Beside her sat Leeann, in a green dress, with her red hair loose and her mascara already running.
"I'm not crying," Leeann said.
"You're crying."
"I'm professionally moved."
Geneva looked at me over her glasses.
She did not say anything.
She reached out and straightened the strap of the guitar on my shoulder, and patted my arm, and nodded once.
That was the highest compliment I have ever received, and I got it twice in one year.
The lady took us into the office first.
"Full Package?" she said.
"Full Package."
"Fifty dollars." She smiled at me over the beaded chain. "But I told you fifty off. So that's nothing."
"I'm paying anyway."
I took two twenties and a ten out of my purse, and laid them on her desk.
"I want it on the record," I said.
Josiah, beside me, opened his mouth.
"Billable?" I said.
"A tip," Josiah said. "Obviously."
The lady took the bills and tucked them in her vest, and took the green ledger out of the drawer.
She wrote in it, in blue ink: Hardaway / Dunavant. Full Package. $50.
She pushed a stack of forms across the desk.
"Read them," she said. "All of them. I'll wait."
