My Ex Threw Me Away, Now He's Bleeding for Me novel · Chapter 5 of 24

Chapter 5: On His Knees

Reid was sitting on the lobby floor of Nell's building when we came back with the last box.

He had his back against the mailboxes and his knees pulled up.

His suit jacket was gone and his tie hung loose.

When he saw me he got to his feet so fast he hit his head on the corner of the radiator.

"Margo, please. Five minutes."

"No," Nell said.

"I'll say it right here. I don't care who hears."

A neighbor on the stairs stopped with a laundry basket on her hip.

Two men from the second floor leaned out of their doorway.

"Then say it," I said.

I set my box down on the tile and folded my arms.

Reid looked around at the people watching.

I watched him decide whether to be Reid Garrity, the fraternity president, or someone else.

He knelt.

It was an ugly, awkward kneel, with one hand flat on the dirty floor.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"For what?"

"For yesterday."

"Be specific, Reid. There are people here."

His throat moved.

"I told Paige where the button was. I helped her plan it. I stood there while my brothers held you down, and I said it was good for you, and it wasn't."

"What else?"

"I knew you hadn't signed her release. I gave her your Fellowship form out of my desk."

Nell breathed out through her nose.

The woman with the laundry basket shifted her feet.

"Why?" I asked.

I had wanted to know since Thursday morning at the police station.
