Chapter 6: No One Carries Me

Warren Garrity didn't shake my hand when I kept mine at my side.

He just smiled at Nell, nodded to the neighbors, and stepped around his son.

"I won't keep you," he said. "I wanted to say how sorry I am. What happened was unforgivable."

"Then you agree it happened," I said.

"Of course. My son has not been well, Miss Tennant. I'm only now learning how unwell."

Reid stood against the mailboxes with his eyes down.

"The Fellowship is a gift," Warren went on. "It was never meant as a leash. A suspension was a clerical mistake and I'll correct it myself. Come to dinner Saturday at the club, and we'll sort out everything."

"Everything," I said.

"Anything you like."

"Put it in writing and I'll bring a witness."

His smile didn't change at all.

"Of course," he said. "We look after our own."

I was not one of his own.

I didn't say so.

He put a hand on Reid's shoulder and walked him out to the car, and the horn did not sound again.

That night Nell took a late shift at the hospital for the cash.

She left at ten with her scrubs on and made me promise to lock the door behind her.

I took my leg off at eleven.

I set it against the wall next to my bed, where I always do.

The socket had rubbed a sore spot on my thigh from carrying boxes, and I lay in the dark with a heating pad on it.

My phone lit up.

Gideon: I'm downstairs. Got the prints for your lawyer. I know it's late. Can I leave them with you?

I typed back: I don't have a lawyer yet.

Then: I'll buzz you in.

Before I could get to the buzzer, the alarm went off.
