Chapter 12: The Cuff

Dawn came up gray over the Patapsco, and I was at the kitchen table before it did.

I had slept two hours on a quilt that smelled of cedar and woken with my mind already running.

I had made coffee.

I had laid three things on the pine in front of me, in a row.

The photograph from discovery, the jacket flat on the white table with the ruler beside the right cuff.

The intake file, open to the chart.

And my own pen, uncapped.

When Kostas came in, I did not look up.

He stopped in the doorway.

He had dressed in the dark, and his hair was damp from the pump at the dock.

He saw the three things on the table, and I felt him see them.

"Sit down," I said.

"Fay," he said.

"Sit down, Kostas."

He sat.

He put his hands flat on the pine without being told, and I was angry at how natural it was.

"I'm going to tell you what I know," I said. "I'd like you to listen without saying anything until I'm done."

"I will," he said.

"The jacket in the closet was a size forty-two long. I bought it," I said.

"You told me," he said.

"I took the sleeves up myself at a tailor on Charles Street, an inch and a quarter, because Niko's arms are long. I know the length of those cuffs to the quarter inch. Look at the photograph."
