Chapter 13: Hands on the Pantry Door

The supervisor was a heavy tired man in a county windbreaker, and he did not like what he saw in the kitchen.

He stood on the porch with a clipboard and looked at my boots by the stove.

Kostas had put on his shirt and a pair of shoes and stood just inside the door, with the monitor hidden under his trouser leg.

Eleni stayed in the Lincoln, with the window down an inch.

I had spent the last four minutes dragging the chair upright and putting the photograph and the chart into my bag.

My palm was hot, and so was his cheek.

He had a red mark across his face the size of my hand.

"Mr. Drakos," the supervisor said. "I have a report that you had an overnight guest."

"Yes," Kostas said.

"The release order says no visitors without notice," the supervisor said, tapping the clipboard.

"The guest is a friend of the family," Kostas said. "She was leaving."

The supervisor turned his head to me.

"Is she the doctor?"

"I'm Dr. Hennessy," I said, from behind the table.

"The evaluator who resigned the case."

"I did."

"Then you're a private citizen," he said.

"I'm a private citizen who is going home," I said.

He looked from me to the red print on Kostas's cheek, and I watched him decide not to ask.

"I'll note it," he said. "Next time, notice."

"There won't be a next time," Kostas said.

"There's always a next time."

He passed a handheld wand over the monitor, and it chirped.

He wrote on the clipboard, and then he looked up at Kostas for a long moment.

"My brother worked the port," he said. "Your trucks put his kids through school."

"I remember your brother," Kostas said. "He was a good man."

"He still talks about the Christmas hams."

"Tell him I will send them again this year."

"Don't send me anything," the supervisor said, but his voice was gentler.

He tucked his pen in his pocket and walked down the steps.

He stopped at the Lincoln and spoke to Eleni through the glass.

I could not hear it.

Then he got in his county car and drove out the gate.
