Chapter 14: Eleni's Table

I went to Eleni's house on Sunday after the early liturgy, because nobody else was going to.

Kostas did not know.

I told him I was going to the church to light a candle, and he looked at me the way a man looks at a lie he has decided to let stand.

Marguerite had told me on the phone not to go near any of them before Monday.

I had not said yes.

I did not know what I would say to Eleni.

I knew only that if there was one person in Baltimore who could make Niko speak, it was the woman who had made him silent.

The house stood on O'Donnell Street, in the long brick row that ran down toward the harbor.

It had white marble steps, scrubbed that morning, and a blue glass eye hung over the door against the evil kind.

I had been in it forty times.

I had eaten Easter eggs in the front room, red as blood, and cracked them against Niko's.

I climbed the steps and rang.

A girl in an apron opened the door, and her face went still.

"Tell her I'm here," I said.

"She has the family at table," the girl said.

"Then I'll wait in the hall."

"She said if you came..."

"I know what she said," I said, and walked past her.

The long dining room was at the back of the house, where it had always been.

It was set for sixteen.

A leg of lamb sat in the middle of the white cloth with the bone turned up, and the red eggs stood in a bowl, and a blue candle burned beside the icon on the sideboard.

The family sat around it, in their church clothes, and every head turned at once.

Aunts and cousins, and the old uncle in the wheelchair.

Eleni sat at the head, in black.
