Chapter 19: Second Row
Nobody in the courtroom moved.
I sat in the witness stand with my hands in my lap and heard what I had said hang in the paneled air.
The prosecutor stood at her lectern with her mouth a little open.
Then the room broke.
It was not loud.
It was the rustle of a hundred people shifting in oak pews, the scratch of a sketch artist's pencil, a reporter in the back row whispering into a phone.
"Order," the judge said.
He did not raise his voice.
He did not have to.
"Counsel, do you have another question for this witness?"
"No, Your Honor," the prosecutor said, after a moment.
"Then the witness may step down."
I stood.
My legs had gone to water, and I held the rail.
I walked back to the bench and sat down, and I did not look at anyone.
I heard the judge shuffle papers.
I heard him say, "The court will take the state's motion under advisement. I want to hear from the defendant."
Kostas stood.
"Mr. Drakos," the judge said. "You have not spoken in this case in eleven months. I would hear from you now, if you wish. You may decline."
"I wish it, Your Honor," Kostas said.
His voice was low and steady, and it filled the room.
"Then you may address the court."
He did not go to the lectern.
He stood where he was, behind the defense table, in the gray suit that was a little loose on him now, with his scarred hand at his side.
"I will not take long," he said. "I will say what I did, and I will say what I did not."
