Chapter 21: Masters

"Get up," I said. "You're on national television."

"I know."

"There's a camera crane right over your head."

"I know that too."

He stayed on one knee on the marble, looking up at me, with his tie crooked and his chipped tooth showing.

"I'm not asking for a ring," Ashton said.

"Good."

"I'm asking for the rest of the sixty days."

My throat was tight.

"We're on day thirteen," I said.

"Then I'm asking for forty-seven more, and I'll tell you what I want after that in Ohio."

Dottie leaned over, still standing on Rex's ring.

"Say yes, you idiot," she whispered. "Thirty-one million people are leaning forward."

"Ask me in Ohio," I said to him.

He smiled, a wide, wrecked, happy thing, and stood up.

He kissed my knuckles in front of the cameras.

Then he kissed my mouth, and the pavilion made a noise like a wave coming in.

Somebody was already pulling the cable out of the crane.

The big engineer in the booth stood and took a small bow.

The chairman of the board came back down the aisle ten minutes later.

He had a lawyer on each side and a stack of paper in his hands.

"Mr. Reeve," he said.

"Yes, sir."

"A minute of your time."

They stood at the foot of the stage, and I stood beside Ashton, because nobody told me not to.
