Chapter 19: On His Knees
The glass doors of Appleton Holdings opened onto a wide flight of stone steps, and by seven the steps were full.
Employees in coats stood in clumps on the plaza with their coffee going cold.
A line of news trucks idled along the curb.
Every phone in the crowd was pointed at the same spot.
Dalton was halfway up the stairs, on his knees.
He had been there since five, the guard had said, and he had not stopped moving.
He was dragging himself up one stone step at a time, with his palms flat on the cold.
His coat was gone, and his trousers were torn at both knees.
Someone had put a sign in his hands.
I read it from the top of the stairs.
It said, in marker, I LET MY WIFE TAKE THE BLAME.
He had written it himself.
Zane came out of the doors behind me and stopped at my shoulder.
"Do you want me to move him?" he said.
"No."
"The police are on their way."
"Let him finish."
I walked down.
The crowd parted for me without a word, and the cameras swung around.
Dalton saw my shoes first.
He lifted his head, and his eyes were swollen almost shut.
"Hal."
"Hello, Dalton."
"I told them everything." His voice was a croak. "I was at the district attorney's office until four. I gave them the name of the man at the morgue. I gave them the names Cora and I used in Pittsburgh, and the apartment, and what my mother paid."
"I heard."
"They're charging my mother. They're charging yours."
"I heard that too."
