Chapter 13: Three Days

The rule was one day, so I started with the arithmetic.

"You found this in Godfrey's study three days ago," I said.

Mason stood in the doorway with the rolls at his feet.

"Yes."

"The rule says a day. That's two days over."

"Emme."

"What's the late fee on a secret? I'd like to see how you priced it."

He did not pick up the bag, and he did not come in.

"I can't price it," he said. "I tried at four this morning."

"Tell me why it was in a drawer."

"Because Constance reads my desk in the main house on Fridays. This table was the one place she wasn't going to look."

"And the call last night?"

"I rang the number on the letterhead on Monday. I wanted to know the file was real before I put it in your hands."

He kept his eyes on mine.

"They called back at midnight. They said it was real, and the client has never asked for it back."

I turned the folder over on the table so the red tab faced him.

"You kissed me against this table with that in the drawer."

"Yes."

"You said you'd stopped keeping her log. You said you'd tell me everything."

"I meant it. I was going to tell you this morning. I bought rolls."

"You bought rolls to tell me."

"I thought you'd want to eat first."

It was the most Mason sentence he had ever said, and it was exactly why I wanted to hit him.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I should have put it in your hand the first night."

"The first night, you'd known me for a few weeks."

"I had. I was counting too."

I stood up and my chair scraped the floor.
