Chapter 21: Costly Repairs
On Monday afternoon I found Mason on my front step, taking the staple out of the door.
It was the staple from the sale notice, still in the wood where the paper had been torn off.
He worked at it with a pair of needle-nose pliers, gently, and it came out in one piece.
A banker's box sat on the step beside him.
"That's my door," I said.
"It's your door as of ten o'clock this morning. I read the transfer." He stood up and put the staple in his shirt pocket. "I wanted to fix something small first."
"Why?"
"Because I'm going to ask you to hear something large."
I let him in.
Dad was on a job, and the kitchen table held the seven envelopes in their row.
Mason set the box on the table, between the electric bill and the water bill.
His shirt was creased from being slept in.
"I gave Godfrey my notice this morning," he said. "He wouldn't take it."
"Of course he wouldn't."
"He cried a little. Then he asked if the gutters were my department."
"Are they?"
"They're everyone's department. That's the problem with the house."
He lifted the lid off the box.
"These are my bank statements for six years. Wages only. Nothing from Constance's own account, ever."
"You don't have to prove that to me."
"I do. You'd have asked."
I would have. I took out the top statement and ran my finger down it.
"There's no carriage house deed," he said. "Constance offered it in the greenhouse. I turned it down, and that part is on the recording too. It's in the box."
