Chapter 19: The Hotel Lobby
Danny stood in the apartment doorway with two paper bags and a look of complete patience.
"I'll put these on the counter," he said. "Nobody say anything."
Nobody did.
Brooke's team posted the hotel the next day.
Her summit was on Sunday the fourteenth, and on Saturday night she was hosting a creators' dinner in the lobby bar of a Seattle hotel, live, for anyone who wanted a look at the brand deals.
It was a public lobby.
Nobody could stop three people from walking through the front door.
The bar was gold and cream, with a ring light on a stand and thirty people in good clothes holding champagne.
Brooke stood in the middle in a white dress with her hair curled for the screen.
She saw us as the glass doors slid open, and I watched her decide.
"Oh my God," she said, turning to the camera with both hands over her mouth. "Guys. Guys. It's my sister."
The creators turned.
"Callie! You came!" She crossed the floor with her arms out. "I have been so scared for you."
"Don't touch me."
She stopped a foot away, and her eyes filled on cue.
"I know you're angry. I forgive you."
"For what?"
"For all of it. For the lies, and for what you did to Danny."
Danny stepped out from behind Nolan.
He did not say anything.
He raised his left hand, palm toward the ring light, and held it in front of the phone she was streaming on.
Two of the fingers ended a joint early, the tips gone to a smooth white pad.
