Chapter 11: Everyone Knew
I stood on the end of the dock holding my mother's phone until my father said my name.
"Rory."
I turned around.
He had Landon's blood up to his wrists.
"Who was that?"
"Fitzgerald. He wants me at Pell's Wharf by sunrise. Alone."
"No," Dad said.
"He says he'll put her in the harbor."
"Then I'll go."
"He doesn't want you."
The ambulances came at three-forty.
Two of them, and four police cars, and then a black car with a silver crown on the door.
They took Landon first, on a stretcher, with a mask over his face.
Declan refused to lie down.
He walked to the second ambulance holding his arm, and at the doors he turned around and looked for me.
"Ro," he said.
The paramedic was trying to push him in.
"Ro. Come with me. Please."
So I did.
In the back of the ambulance he sat on the stretcher and stared at me.
His arm was bent wrong below the elbow. He didn't seem to notice.
