Chapter 15: Torin's POV: The Line

Torin's POV

I felt her go over the Harlan line, and something in my chest pulled tight.

I was in the kitchen with the border map under my elbows, and I stood up so fast that the chair went over.

My head guard was already at the door with six wolves behind him, dressed for the cold.

"She's on Harlan land," he said. "Alone. We take the truck road, we're at the cairns in twenty minutes."

"No."

"Alpha."

"Nobody crosses." I picked up the chair and set it on its legs. "She went by herself. She asked me for the keys, and I gave them."

"That's the daftest thing I've heard you say."

"Probably."

"If Rhys Harlan's guards put a hand on her..."

"Then she tells me, and I go."

The head guard looked at me for a long moment.

The six behind him looked at their boots.

"Stand down," I said. "All of you. Take the east gate shift and sit in the guardhouse, and if one of you so much as walks the fence line I'll hear about it."

They went.

I stood in the kitchen with my hands flat on the table, listening to the quiet thread in my chest.

She was walking up a hill, and she was afraid, and she was not afraid of me.

I had never in my life been so scared by a feeling that good.

Fenna came in with a dish towel.

"You'll wear a groove in my floor," she said.

"I want to go after her."

"I know you do."

"I let her go to that clearing by herself."

"You let her walk into a place she has the right to stand in." Fenna wrung the towel. "That's the whole difference between a mate and a keeper, boy. It took your father forty years to learn it, and he never did."
