"Then he wins," I said. "Just like that."
"No," Bastian said. "Just like that, he tries."
He stood and held out his hand.
I took it.
"Sleep," he said. "Tomorrow, you stand up in that hall and you let him say it to your face."
At ten the next morning, the great hall was full.

Staff stood along the back wall pretending to carry things.
The long tables had been pushed aside.
The Council sat in a half circle of chairs under the covered opening in the roof, the elder in the center.
Bastian sat to her right.
I stood alone in the middle of the floor.
My family sat in the front row.
Anson had driven up that morning.
He sat at the end next to Lottie, his knee bouncing.
Lottie's hand was wrapped in white gauze.
She held it in her lap where everyone could see it.
