Chapter 9: Senna
"What does that mean?" I said.
My mother tilted her head.
"It means your father came home one October night twenty-one years ago with a baby wrapped in a bath towel."
I couldn't feel my hands.
"He had a fated mate," she said. "Did you know that? Some Keeper's girl from over the ridge. He met her at a border council and lost his mind."
"You're lying."
"I was already his Luna. I had already given him Anson." Her voice didn't rise. "She died having you. And he put you in my arms and asked me to tell the pack you were mine."
"Why would you say yes?"
"Because my family's alliance was worth more to him than I was. Because if I said no, I'd be the Luna whose mate loved someone else. In front of everyone."
She leaned closer.
"So I said yes. And every single day I looked at your face and saw hers."
"What was her name?"
My mother smiled.
"I've never said it in my house," she said. "I'm not going to start for you."
She walked past me down the corridor.
Her shoulder brushed mine.
She didn't look back.
I found Tilda in the kitchen, helping the housekeeper shell peas.
She took one look at me and put the bowl down.
"She told you," Tilda said.
"Part of it."
