Chapter 6: Silver

The elder's cabin stood at the edge of the pines, a mile behind the lodge.

Corwin walked me halfway and stopped at the tree line.

"I'll be right here," he said. "If you yell, I'll hear it."

"She's ninety, Corwin."

"She also stood up in a room of two hundred wolves and stopped your mother with a look."

I kissed his cheek and went in alone.

The cabin smelled of dried sage and woodsmoke.

The old woman sat by the stove in a rocking chair with a blanket across her knees.

She didn't get up.

"Close the door. Sit. Take that hat off."

I took the hat off.

She studied my face for a long time, and I let her.

"Grey," she said. "In daylight, grey. In the dark?"

"I don't know what you mean."

"The color of your eyes at night, girl. What do they do?"

"Nothing. They're just eyes."

"Has anyone ever told you what you look like under the moon?"

"My mother says I'm hard to see in the dark." I frowned. "She used to make me stay indoors on full-moon nights."

"Indoors."

"In the cellar," I said.

The word came out of me slowly, because I had never said it to anyone.

Even Corwin only knew that I didn't like basements.

"She said I was a late bloomer and it was dangerous for a weak wolf to run."
