I had never heard Damon say he was sorry.

Not in seven years. Not after eighteen dates.

I stopped an arm's length from him.

"For which part?" I asked.

He laughed. It came out broken.

"Start anywhere."

Behind me, across the lot, Arlo's truck had pulled up at the curb. He didn't get out. He turned off the engine and waited.

Damon saw him.

"He can come over. I don't mind."

"He knows. That's why he's staying there."

Damon looked down at his shoes.

"The board voted at eight thirty this morning," he said. "Unanimous. I'm out. I have until Friday to clear my office."

"And you still sent your lawyers in there."

"I didn't. The petition went in under my name before the wedding. Nobody thought to pull it." He rubbed his face. "I came to watch it lose. I thought I owed it that much."

A gull landed on the roof of his car and walked across it.

He didn't shoo it.

"I went through the trackers last night," he said. "After the party. By myself, in my office."

"And?"

"Unit seven left our garage at three twenty in the morning. My head of security was driving. This morning he told the police she called him from my phone at two. While I was asleep next to her."
