Chapter 27: For Real
The carousel slowed and stopped with a long sigh.
I slid off the gray horse.
My mother was still at the rope, holding the purple ticket.
Marigold saw where I was looking.
"I gave her that," she whispered. "She was standing by herself. Is she bad?"
"She's my mom."
Marigold thought about it.
"Is she bad, though?"
"Go get in line again, bug."
I stepped down off the platform and walked to the rope.
Up close, my mother looked smaller.
No pearls.
No assistant.
Her hair was in a plain clip, and her coat was buttoned wrong by one button.
"I didn't think you'd come," I said.
"Neither did I." She turned the ticket over in her fingers. "I took the bus. The fourteen. I've never been on a city bus."
"How was it?"
"A man ate an egg sandwich next to me."
I almost laughed.
She looked past me at the carousel, at Captain, at the line still stretching out to the lot.
"Your father wanted to come. The doctors said no crowds."
"How is he?"
