The hammering was the cannery crew, building a little step up to the carousel platform.
I watched them from the storeroom window with my coffee.
Saffron arrived at seven with a curling iron and a garment bag.
"Don't panic," she said. "It's not couture."
It wasn't.
It was an ivory cotton dress with short sleeves and a row of buttons down the front, where I could reach them myself.
"The consignment shop," Saffron said. "The owner picked it. She said you'd know why."
I did.
Saffron did my hair at the cot. She burned my ear once and swore.
At nine, Marigold banged on the door.
"Is she ready? It's on a schedule!"
She came in anyway, in her purple dress and new yellow rain boots, carrying a coffee can full of marigolds.
She was the maid of honor. She had asked for the job in writing, in crayon, in March.
"These are for you," she said. "They're my name."
"I know."
"They're better than roses."
"They are."
My phone sat on the windowsill.
On eighteen wedding mornings, it had rung before ten.
