Chapter 14: The Quiet Night
I caught them at the Radcliffe gate, because I ran the whole way and they were carrying a grown man.
Lottie came up behind me with her fists already out.
"Put him down," I said.
The creek warrior looked at me over Jasper's shoulder.
"You've got no say here, omega."
"I hold the Alpha-to-be's name for a year and a day," I said. "Every wolf who wears his guard's grey answers to the one who holds it."
"The Alpha's order stands over yours."
"The Alpha's order stands over the heir," said a thin voice behind us. "The heir's name is a different thing, and you were there when the Moon said so."
The Keeper came up the lane on her stick.
She did not hurry, and she did not need to.
The men in grey looked at her, and then at the study window above the gate.
The curtain there did not move.
"I want his name and his rank written down," I said to the creek warrior. "Tell the Beta I'll be asking him who sent you."
For a long moment nobody breathed.
Then the men lowered Jasper onto the gravel, one boot at a time, and walked off without a word.
Lottie spat after them.
Jasper opened his eyes with blood in his hair and said, "Did I fall?"
"You got hit with a bar," I said. "Don't try to stand."
"I wasn't going to."
He looked at me, and his mouth tried to smile.
By dusk he was on the bench in our yard with the cut closed, because wolves heal fast.
I was sitting on the step with my back against the post.
