Autumn's POV

Roland did not shift.

He fought his son in his shirtsleeves, with his silver hair lit white by the rising moon, and he smiled the whole time.

Jasper got up four times.

Each time he got up slower, with his left arm hanging and the blood running down it into the grass.

Each time Roland let him reach his feet, and then hit him again.

It was not a fight.

It was a lesson, and the whole pack knew it.

"You were always soft," Roland said, conversationally, as Jasper went down on one knee. "I told your mother so. She said you took after her."

"Don't," said Jasper, through his teeth.

"She'd be ashamed of you. Groveling for an omega in front of the whole valley."

I was already in the ring.

I do not remember crossing the stones.

Lottie said afterward that she grabbed for my braid and got air.

"Alpha," I said.

Roland turned his head slowly.

"The holder of the heir's name has no business in the circle, girl."

"She has every business," said the Keeper. "It is her name he is fighting for."

I took Elin Radcliffe's green book out of my coat.

"Your wife asked you three times to send for the Southfork healer," I said, in a voice that carried to the tree line. "You told her Ironwood does not kneel."

"She wrote it down. It's in her own hand, on the last pages."

The meadow went quiet.

Roland's smile stayed where it was, but it went flat.

"Where did you get that?"

"Your son left it on my bed."
