Chapter 12: Right on Time

I turned around.

Evander stood at the top of the terrace steps with his hand still on the door.

He had heard it all. I could see it in his face.

"Tell me it's a lie," I said.

"It isn't."

Gavin made a small sound behind me and backed into the hedge.

Evander did not look at him.

"My father sent me here in September," he said. "He had a letter from the Alpha. A human child, eighteen years old this winter. I was to confirm that she existed."

"And did you?"

"Yes."

The word hit me hard.

I came up the steps one at a time until I stood in front of him.

"You knew what I was the first day you saw me."

"I knew in the stairwell."

"You knew, and you watched me for five months."

"Yes."

"You watched me walk into that clearing in my white dress and wait for a wolf that was never coming." My voice shook. "You sat in a hall full of vampires and listened to people whisper about me. You could have warned me."

"I didn't know what they planned," he said. "I swear it. I thought they'd wait until you were put out. I didn't know it would be done in front of the pack."

"You still knew what I was. And you let me hear it from a boy in a garden."

He took it.

He stood there and took it, and he did not argue.

"You never wrote the report," I said.

"No."

"Why?"

His hand dropped from the door.

"My mother was the last human the courts knew about," he said. "My father kept her in the cellar of this house for twenty years. He called it caring for her."

My mouth went dry.

"She died when I was six. He told me it was an illness." He stared out at the snow. "When I smelled you on that landing, I smelled her. Soap and cold rain and thistle. I couldn't give you to him. I couldn't write down your name."
