Chapter 16: Dinner at the Pack House

I took the envelope from the wolf in the grey jacket and did not open it.

"I know what it says," I said. "I'll come tomorrow."

"The Alpha said tonight, Miss Corvino."

"Then he can say it to me himself."

Tobias had stepped up beside me with our two bags.

He said nothing, and he did not need to. The six wolves looked at him, and then at the floor.

"Tonight," I said at last. "But I'm driving, and Tobias is coming with me."

The wolf in front opened his mouth.

"A guest may stand with a daughter of the pack," I said. "It's in the old law. My grandmother taught it to me."

He closed his mouth again.

The Murgatroyd pack house sat at the end of a gravel road, with every window lit.

I had eaten dinner there every Sunday for five years.

Tobias stopped at the edge of the lawn and turned off the engine.

"I'll be in the car," he said.

"You could come in."

"A lone wolf at the Alpha's table is an insult he can use. You walk in alone, and walk out the same way." He looked at me steadily. "I'll be here the whole time."

I got out.

The dining room was full. The long table held the Alpha at its head, his nephew on one side, and a dozen pack elders.

Down the table sat Rosa, in a pressed blouse with her gold cross at her throat.

Giada sat beside her in white, with her phone face down by her plate.

Alexander had the last seat. He did not lift his head.

"Nina," the Alpha said, and rose.

He came around the table with both hands out.

"My girl," he said. "You've been missed."
