Chapter 7: The Porch
Seb's POV
I did not sleep in the big bed that night either.
I lay on the porch daybed under three quilts with the lake black and the cold coming through the screens, and I listened to the house.
There was a creak in the hall, and then bare feet on the boards.
Dolly stood in the doorway in my old gray T-shirt, which came to the middle of her thighs.
She had her hair down and a cup of tea in her hands.
She wore the expression I was learning, the one she had when she had already decided something and meant to make me hear it.
"You can't sleep," she said.
"I sleep fine."
"You've been staring at the ceiling for two hours.
"I can hear the springs."
"It's a daybed."
"It's February," Dolly said.
"Your rule was the porch.
"It was a rule, and I'd like to break it."
"You can't break my rule.
"It's mine."
"Then I'm throwing it back at you," she said.
"Come to bed, Seb.
"Not for that.
"For sleeping.
"There's room."
I sat up.
My heart was doing something it had not done in four years.
She stood in the doorway with the tea, and I thought, she means it.
She would lie next to me, and I would lie next to her, and that would be all.
I did not know how a man was supposed to survive it.
"I snore," I said.
"I'll hit you with a pillow."
I followed her down the hall.
Her bed was narrow and warm, with a quilt her mother had made, and the room smelled of roux and soap and something sweet I could not name.
