Chapter 10: Fish Fry
The Friday fish fry at the Kralj supper club was the only night of the week the whole hill came down for the same meal.
The long family table stood at the back under the windows.
Baba Stana sat at the head of it in black.
I sat on her right.
Xander sat on her left, with Ilija beside him, and below us six cousins and their wives and a priest who had come for the walleye.
Around us the hall was full, three hundred people, plates of perch and coleslaw and rye, a man with an accordion in the corner playing something slow.
Nobody was looking at me, which meant everybody was.
I had my pad on my knee under the napkin.
I wrote everything down.
A cousin's wife said, "She's so thin, poor thing."
Another said, "Did you see the ring?"
A third said, low, "Do you think it's true she saw him?"
I wrote that one, and the cousin's name, and the time.
