Chapter 13: The Front Pew

Nobody in St. Sava's moved for the length of one breath.

Then my father laughed.

He turned in the front pew, his gold cross swinging, and lifted both hands to the parish as if he had been handed a joke.

"My daughter," he said, warmly, in Serbian and then in English.

"She is a bride of three weeks.

"She has not slept.

"She is writing in her little book again."

A few people laughed with him, uncertainly.

He held his smile and looked up at me in the loft.

His eyes were not laughing at all.

"Come down, moya draga," he said.

"You are tired."

I did not come down.

I kept the pad open on the rail, and I read it again, in the same voice, to a church that had gone as still as a held photograph.

"The Wierzba thing is cleaned.

"She saw nothing.

"Keep the Kralj boy busy."

Then I said, "You said it on the phone in the hall outside your study, on the third of December, at twenty to seven.

"I was standing three feet from your door with my keys in my hand."

My father's smile stayed where it was.

The color went out from under it.
