Chapter 15: The Widow
Xander's POV
I went to the widow's house that night, because she had not asked me to, and nobody else could.
It was a narrow frame house on the hill, three blocks from the church.
A plaster saint stood in the front window, and a light was on in the kitchen.
I stood on the porch for ten minutes with my hat in my hand.
I had not been so afraid of a door since I was twelve.
She opened it before I knocked.
She wore a housedress and a cardigan, and her white braid hung down her back.
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she stepped back and let me in.
The kitchen was small and hot and smelled of dill.
On the table, in the middle of a lace cloth, sat a plate of pierogi nobody had touched.
On the wall behind it hung a photograph of Tomasz at forty in a canvas jacket, squinting, his mustache still black.
"Sit," she said.
I did not sit.
I said what I had come to say, in the little Polish I had, and then in English.
"I killed your husband, Pani Wierzba."
She hit me.
She had to reach.
It was an open hand across my face, hard, and her ring cut my lip.
