Chapter 9: Wrong V

Luca's POV

I had been awake for two hours with her ledger pages on my knee when I found the wrong V.

Graciela was asleep in the next room.

I had walked out of her bed at half past one, because she was breathing slowly and I did not trust myself to stay without waking her.

My own room was dark except for a desk lamp pulled low.

She had pressed the pages into my hand before she slept.

"Read them," she had said, with her eyes shut.

"Tell me what I'm missing."

I read the wire records to Gulf Coast Holdings.

I read the sale of the Montalvo building six years ago, to a company with a clean name and a post office box.

The sale had a signature at the bottom.

Vincenzo Ricci.

I would have known it in my sleep.

My father signed every paper in fat blue ink, and the capital V ended in a long open hook that dropped below the line.

I looked at the V on the page.

It closed.

It was a small neat circle, and my father's V had never closed in his life.

I put the page down on my knee and sat very still.

I had known for seven years that someone was stealing from my house.

I had suspected three men and trusted the fourth.

Ottavio had taught me to read a balance sheet when I was nineteen.

He had stood beside me at my father's grave with his hand on my shoulder and said he would be what Vincenzo was.
