Chapter 22: The Epitaphios
Thalia's POV
The bells began at dusk.
They tolled from the cathedral on Pinellas Avenue, slow and single.
The doors opened, and the Epitaphios came out into the street on the shoulders of eight men.
It was a bier of flowers, white and red, with a gold canopy.
Behind it came the priest, the candles, the choir, and the whole of the Anclote.
I walked in the first rank of the Pallis, in my mother's black coat, with the old man at my left.
He wore a dark suit, and his left wrist was bare.
I had left the shawl on his porch, folded.
My father walked at the front pole of the bier, in black, bareheaded, with the cross on his chest.
He did not look back.
At the corner by the bank the priest raised his hand, and the bier stopped.
"Under the truce," the priest said, in a clear old voice, "the road is open to anyone who wishes to speak."
A thousand people stood in the street.
My father set down his end of the pole on his shoulder, gently, and turned.
"Brothers," Petros Mavrakis said.
His voice carried to the last row.
"I did not want to do this on the holiest night of the year," he said.
"But a child of mine has asked to speak, and I owe the dock the truth about her first," he said.
