Chapter 23: Christos Anesti
At midnight on Holy Saturday every light in the cathedral went out.
The whole church stood in the dark, with the doors open and the street behind us full of people.
Nobody spoke.
Then the priest came out of the altar with a single candle, and said in a loud voice, "Come, receive the light."
The light passed from hand to hand.
It went down the aisle and out the doors and along Pinellas Avenue, one candle lighting the next.
Soon a thousand faces stood out of the dark with a small flame in front of each.
The old man lit mine.
His hand was steady.
He held the wick to his own, and it caught, and I saw his face over it, wet and calm.
"Christos Anesti," the priest sang.
"Alithos Anesti," said the whole street.
The bells began.
I said it too, with them, in my own voice, and I did not stumble.
The big cousin pushed through the crowd to us at the edge of the steps.
He leaned in, and spoke low in the old man's ear.
I caught it.
The grey Mercedes had gone over the Anclote bridge at eleven, with one man in it.
The nine had stayed.
