Chapter 12: The Return Lunch
The Villa Calabria had held my christening, my First Communion party, and my mother's funeral lunch.
On the twenty-first day, Luca walked me through its front doors on his arm.
Silvio came behind us, and six men.
Rosalba came last, in her good black coat, with a covered dish she refused to leave in the car.
The hall smelled of garlic and Sunday sauce.
Long tables ran the length of the room under white cloths, set for eighty.
My father's men filled the chairs on the left side, and the right side was empty, waiting for us.
I looked for my mother's photograph.
It had hung beside the door since the day the hall opened, a woman in a green dress laughing at the camera.
There was a nail in the wall, and a pale square where the frame had been.
"They moved it," I said.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Luca's hand covered mine on his sleeve.
At the head table my father stood, arms wide, in his best grey suit.
"Don Luca! Raffi! My family!" His voice boomed under the ceiling. "Come in, come in, you honor my house."
"Where is she?" Luca said.
"Sit. Eat. We'll get to that."
