Chapter 13: The Window Seat
Nobody in the hall touched their glass.
Luca's hand had closed on my elbow, and I could feel it shaking.
"Say the word," he said, very low. "I'll have her out of here in a minute."
"She doesn't want to be carried out."
"Then what do you want?"
I looked at my father, still smiling with his arm around the girl who wore my coat.
"I want to see my room."
Luca stared at me.
"Wait at the curb," I said. "Give me an hour, and don't come in unless I call you."
"Raffaela."
"You said I could say no to any rule you made."
His jaw worked.
Then he let go of my elbow.
"One hour," he said. "Silvio takes the door."
I turned to Gemma.
"Will you take me home?"
She looked at me, then at her brother, then at my father.
"Of course," she said. "It's your home."
We walked out of the Villa Calabria side by side, past eighty people who did not breathe.
The house in Dongan Hills was ten minutes away, brick, with the stoop my mother had scrubbed every Saturday.
Gemma had her own key.
She let us in, and I smelled sauce before I saw the kitchen.
