Chapter 17: By Her Father's Right
I dressed in four minutes.
Luca reached the front steps ahead of me, shirtless under his coat, with Silvio at his shoulder and six guards falling in on either side.
"Stay here," he said.
"No."
"Raffaela," he said.
"You told me you'd have him carried out if I wanted it over."
His eyes held mine.
"I'm not asking you to carry anyone," I said. "I'm asking you to stand behind me and say nothing. Not a word. Not whatever he says."
"And if they touch you?"
"Then you can say whatever you like."
A muscle moved in his jaw.
"Mrs. Vannelli."
"Please, Luca."
He stepped back one pace, and Silvio gave me a tiny nod.
I walked down the long gravel drive in the cold with my heels on the stones and my mother's pearls under my collar.
The iron gate stood shut.
On the far side, two of my father's men waited beside the black Lincoln.
I knew them both.
One had taught me to ride a bike, and one had carried my mother's casket.
"Raffi," said the older one, and looked at the ground. "I'm sorry. Your father says I have to."
"Give me the paper."
He passed it through the bars.
It was one folded sheet, typed, with my father's signature in his loopy blue pen.
I read it aloud, loudly enough for every guard on the wall to hear.
"By the custom of our fathers, and by the right of Aurelio Costanzo, the married daughter Raffaela is recalled to her father's house, her husband having failed the Return Lunch."
My voice stayed steady.
"Signed by Aurelio Costanzo. Witnessed by nobody."
"Raffi," said the younger man miserably.
