Chapter 21: The Ferry
The fog sat on the harbor so thick I could not see the bow of the boat.
We stood at the stern rail on the open deck, the five of us.
Silvio had carried coffee from the terminal in a paper tray.
The engine throbbed under the planks.
Gemma and Rosalba had found a bench against the cabin wall, with a blanket over their knees.
Silvio stood beside them with the tray.
"We could have taken the bridge," he said.
"I wanted to arrive the way my mother did," I said.
"On a boat?"
"She came over from Reggio on one," I said. "Then she took this ferry on her first day."
I watched the fog.
"She told me it was the first time anyone gave her a seat."
Silvio nodded slowly and said nothing else.
The cold came through my coat at the shoulders.
Luca stood behind me at the rail, big and quiet.
He opened his charcoal overcoat and pulled me back into it.
My back lay against his chest, and the lapels closed around my arms.
It was warm in there, and smelled of him.
"Better?" he said.
"Yes."
"Your ears are red," he said.
"It's the wind."
He lifted a hand and cupped it over my left ear.
