Chapter 4: Rosalba's Kitchen
Rosalba put a plate of eggs in front of me at seven the next morning and sat down across the table to watch me eat.
"You don't sleep," she said.
"I slept."
"You don't sleep," she said again. "Neither does he. Two of you in one house, and nobody sleeps."
The kitchen was the warmest room I had ever been in.
A long scarred table, copper pots on hooks, a radio tuned low to a station in Italian, and bread rising under a towel by the stove.
I had not eaten at a table with a woman fussing over me since my mother died.
My eyes stung, and I looked hard at the eggs.
"Eat," said Rosalba. "I raised that boy and his sister. I know when a person is hungry."
"Tell me about her."
Rosalba's hands stopped.
"Gemma?"
"Her room. Can I see it?"
The old woman looked at me for a long time, and then she wiped her hands on her apron and stood.
She took me up the west stairs to a room at the end of a corridor.
It was yellow and full of books.
A narrow bed, a quilt, a desk with a lamp, a record player, and a tall window that looked out over the garden.
Iron bars ran across the window, painted white.
"They weren't here before," Rosalba said.
"Luca put them up?"
"When his father was shot. Doubled the guards, doubled the walls, put those on every window on the second floor." She touched the frame. "He called it safety."
"Did she mind?"
"She never said. She read in the greenhouse. She never asked for a phone, never asked for a key to the gate." Rosalba's mouth thinned. "I used to think that was good manners."
She opened the closet and took out a green wool coat.
"Wear it. It's twenty degrees out there, and yours is a rag. She'd want you warm."
I put it on.
