Chapter 19: The Club
The Oglethorpe Club had a doorman in white gloves, a portrait of a general in every room.
A rule that women's coats were taken at the door by a man.
I wore the black dress again, and I had not told Beau.
That was a lie of omission, I knew, and it was against the new terms.
I had left him a note on his pillow, in my own handwriting, before I slipped out.
Gone to hear what he says. Alone because he asked. Back by ten. S.
I did not feel entirely clean about the word alone.
I told myself that Winston would never say anything in front of a witness, and that this was the only way to hear it.
He had a table in the back, in a private alcove, with a candle and a bottle of red.
He rose and held my chair.
"You look lovely," he said.
"Tell me where the money is."
"Let me pour you a glass first," he said.
"No."
"Sabra." He sat down, smiling, and unfolded his napkin. "We are going to do this like civilized people. I want to tell you a thing about myself, and I want you to listen."
