Chapter 20: Seventy-Five Minutes
Carly's POV
I talked him out of the truck on Sunday night, with the phone against my ear and my voice shaking.
I told him he had a store to open in seven hours, and a dog, and that I would live through a week.
"Friday," I said. "Close up and come Friday. I'll have the door open."
"Friday," Milan said, and it cost him.
It was the longest week of my life.
I cleaned teeth for nine hours a day, and my hands moved on their own, and a patient asked if I was sick.
On Friday night I stood in my hallway at eleven-forty in a T-shirt with my heart going, and listened to the stairs.
I heard the outer door, and then boots.
Three flights, taken two steps at a time.
I opened my door before he knocked.
He filled the frame, in his canvas coat, with the cold coming off him, and his cap in his fist.
His hair was flattened, and he had driven seventy-five minutes in the dark.
"Hello," I said.
He walked in.
He kicked the door shut behind him without looking, and I heard the latch catch.
He had me against it before the sound finished.
His mouth came down on mine.
It was a hard kiss, with teeth.
I had both hands in his coat and one leg already hooked around the back of his knee.
"Seven days," he said against my lips.
"Six and a half."
"I counted every one."
"So did I," I said.
"Turn around."
I turned.
"Hands on the door. Flat. Above your head."
I put my palms against the cold steel and the paint chipped under my fingers.
He stood behind me and ran his hands down my sides, over the T-shirt, over my hips.
