Chapter 21: Both Keys
I called the practice at eight on Saturday morning, from the kitchen, with Milan sitting on the one chair that wasn't buried in a box.
The office manager picked up on the second ring.
"I'm giving notice," I said. "Two weeks. I'm sorry about the short staff."
She was quiet for a second.
"Is this about your father?"
"It's about home."
"Well," she said. "The doctor will be livid, and I'll be glad. There's a spot open at the practice in Kittanning, if you want my friend's number."
I wrote it on the back of my hand.
I called my landlord next and told him I would be out in a month.
He sighed about the mattress frame without having seen it.
When I hung up, Milan was looking at me.
He sat with his hands between his knees and his hat on the floor, and he didn't say anything.
"What?"
"I'm listening to it," he said. "Say it once more."
"I'm moving home."
"Slower."
"I'm moving home, Milan," I said.
He stood up, picked up the biggest box in the room, and carried it out the door without another word.
