Chapter 13: The Spring House
The whole lawn was looking at us, and Hayes still hadn't said a word.
He had a glass of bourbon in his free hand, the one Boone's toast had stopped halfway to his mouth.
I let go of his other hand.
I worked his grandmother's ring off my finger.
It came hard over the knuckle, because my hand was shaking.
Then I held it over his glass and let it go.
It made a small sound when it hit the bottom.
Two hundred people heard it anyway.
"Lainey," Hayes said.
"Not here," I said. "You don't get to do it here."
I turned around and walked up the lawn to his house.
Nobody stopped me.
The band didn't start again.
I was on the front porch with my hand on the screen door when he caught up to me.
He'd left the glass behind.
From his porch you could see across the fence line into our back pasture.
The old stone spring house sat down there in the dark, a pale square under the moon.
