"Then I'll sign it right back to you," I said.
"Then I'll tear it up," Hayes said. "I've got all day, every day, till November."
He unloaded both horses into the front paddock himself.
Then he drove off and left me standing at the gate with my mother's wedding dress.
On Saturday night I wore my mother's navy dress to the horsemen's banquet.

The banquet chairman read out my mother's name a little before nine.
Her pictures came up on the screen, one after another.
There was my mother on Clover, and my mother in the foaling barn in a headlamp.
Then there she was on the front lawn under the barn lights, laughing, with those pearls at her throat.
